[영어 원서책] 한달동안 원더(Wonder) 원서 읽기 - 10일차(p95 ~ p104)

오늘은 이어서 원더 10일차 - “비아” 의 이야기인데요~ 어제 빼먹은 절친 “미란다”의 변화의 암시와 겉으로는 표현하지 않는 “비아”의 감정, 생각에 대해 읽어봤어요~😌🤓☺️

『원더(Wonder) 원서 읽기』 - 10일차 p95 ~ p104

▷ Since Miranda’s always been really good about calling us as soon as she got home from summer camp, I was a little surprised when I didn’t hear from her. I even texted her and she didn’t reply. I figured maybe she had ended up staying in the camp longer, now that she was a counselor. Maybe she met a cute guy.

미란다는 여름 캠프에서 돌아오자마자 항상 우리에게 먼저 전화를 했기 때문에, 나는 그녀에게 연락이 없자 조금 놀랐다. 문자까지 보냈는데 답장도 없었다. 이제는 그녀가 청소년 수련회 지도사였기 때문에 캠프에 더 오래 머물게 되었을지도 모른다고 생각했다. 어쩌면 그녀는 멋진 남자애를 만났는지도 모른다.

▷ He and Christopher, his best friend, used to play with lightsabers and Star Wars stuff whenever they got together, and they had both started growing their braids at the same time. When August cut his braid off that night, without an explanation, without telling me beforehand (which was surprising) - or even calling Christopher - I was just so upset I can’t even explain why.

어거스트와 절친한 친구인 크리스토퍼는 광선검과 스타워즈 같은 장남감들을 함께 가지고 놀곤 했는데, 둘 다 동시에 땋기 시작했다. 그날 밤 어거스트가 아무런 설명도 없이, 그전에 나한테 말도 없이 (그래서 놀라운 일이었다) 아니 심지어 크리스토퍼에게 전화도 하지 않은 채 땋은 머리를 잘랐을 때, 나는 그 이유를 설명할 수 없지만, 순간 너무 화가 났다.

▷ But she didn’t come back that night.

Dad did. He told me Auggie had had a bad first day and Mom was helping him through it. He asked me how my day had gone and I told him fine. He said he didn’t believe me for a second, and I told him Miranda and Ella were acting like jerks.

그러나 엄마는 그날 밤 돌아오지 않았다.

대신 아빠가 왔다. 아빠는 나에게 어기가 힘든 첫날을 보냈고 엄마는 그일에 대해 다독여주고 있다고 말했다. 아빠는 나에게 오늘 하루가 어땠냐고 물었고 나는 좋았다고 대답했다. 아빠는 조금도 내 말을 믿지 않는다고 말했고, 나는 미란다와 엘라가 얼간이처럼 행동하고 있다고 아빠에게 털어놓았다.

▷ Dad always managed to make everyone laugh. And sometimes that’s all you need to feel better.

아빠는 항상 모두를 웃게 만드는 재주가 있다. 그리고 때로는 웃음이 기분을 푸는 데는 최고다.

▷ I wonder how many nights she’s stood outside his door. And I wonder if she’s ever stood outside my door like that.

나는 얼마나 많은 밤을 엄마는 어기의 문밖에 서 있었는지 궁금하다. 그리고 과연 내 문밖에서도 엄마가 그렇게 서 있었던 적이 있었는지 궁금하다.

▷ In August’s case, the doctors were able to identify one of the “single nucleotide deletion mutations” that made war on his face. The weird thing is, though you’d never know it from looking at them: both my parents carry that mutant gene. And I carry it, too.

어거스트의 경우, 의사들은 그의 얼굴에 전쟁을 일으킨 “단일염기 결실 돌연변이” 중 하나를 확인할 수 있었다. 이상한 것은, 엄마 아빠를 봐서는 결코 알지 못하겠지만: 엄마 아빠 모두 그 돌연변이 유전자를 가지고 있다는 것이다. 그리고 내 몸에도 존재한다.

“비아”가 가족력에 대해 자세히 설명하면서 유전자에 관한 이야기를 하는데~ 확실히 어려운 어휘가 많네요~ 역시~ 제가 초등학생 수준이 맞는 것 같아요 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ  그럼 다음 11일차에 만나볼게요~ 빠이👋
