오늘은 원더 26일차 - “어거스트”가 수련회에 간 이야기예요~^^

태어나서 처음으로 부모와 떨어져있게 된 “어기” 불안하면서도 한편으론 새로운 경험에 흥분되겠죠?!!! 다행히 괴롭히는 “줄리안”이 안와서 맘편히 지낼 수 있게 되었네요~😌😊🤗

『원더(Wonder) 원서 읽기』 - 26일차 p256 ~ p264

▷ Daisy’s ghost made me feel super strong inside, knowing wherever I am, she’d be there with me. I got up out of bed and went to my desk and wrote a little note to Mom. Then I went into the living room, where my packed bag was by the door. I opened it up and fished inside until I found what I was looking for.

I took Baboo back to my room, and I laid him in my bed and taped the little note to Mom on his chest. And then I covered him with my blanket so Mom would find him later.

The note read: 

Dear Mom, I won’t need Baboo, but if you miss me, you can cuddle with him yourself. xo Auggie.

데이지의 유령은 내가 어디에 있든 나와 함께 있을 거라는 걸 깨달으면서, 내안의 힘이 엄청 강하다는 걸 느끼게 해줬다. 나는 침대에서 일어나 책상으로 가서 엄마에게 작은 쪽지를 썼다. 그런 다음 거실로 나가 내 여행가방을 놓아둔 문 옆으로 갔다. 나는 가방을 열고 내가 찾고 있는 걸 찾을 때까지 안을 여기저기 뒤졌다.

나는 바부를 다시 내 방으로 데리고 가서, 내 침대에 눕히고 엄마에게 보내는 작은 쪽지를 바부의 가슴에 테이프로 붙였다. 그런 다음 나중에 엄마가 바부를 찾을 수 있도록 내 담요로 덮어 놓았다.

쪽지에는 이렇게 썼다: 

엄마에게, 나는 바부가 필요 없을 거야, 내가 그리우면, 대신 바부를 껴안아도 돼. 어기가.

▷ The bus ride went really fast. I sat by the window and Jack was next to me in the aisle seat. Summer and Maya were in front of us. Everyone was in a good mood. Kind of loud, laughing a lot.

I noticed right away that Julian wasn’t on our bus, even though Henry and Miles were. I figured he must be on the other bus, but then I overheard Miles tell Amos that Julian ditched the grade trip because he thought the whole nature-retreat thing was, quote unquote, dorky.

I got totally pumped because dealing with Julian for three days in a row - and two nights - was a major reason that I was nervous about this whole trip. So now without him there, I could really just relax and not worry about anything.

버스를 타고 가는 시간이 금세 지나갔다. 나는 창가에 앉았고 잭은 통로 쪽 내 옆에 있었다. 썸머와 마야는 우리 앞에 있었다. 모두들 기분이 좋았다. 좀 떠들썩했고, 많이 웃었다.

헨리와 마일즈가 있었음에도 불구하고 줄리안이 우리 버스에 없다는 것을 바로 알아차렸다. 다른 버스에 타고 있을 거라고 생각했지만, 우연히 마일즈가 아모스에게 줄리안이 수련회를 빠졌다고 말하는 걸 들었다. 왜냐하면 줄리안은 자연휴양림의 모든 게, 말하자면, 바보 같은 거라고 생각했기 때문이다.

나는 줄리안과 2박 3일 동안 상대하는 게 이 여행 내내 긴장했던 주된 이유였기 때문에 완전히 흥분했다. 그래서 이제 줄리안도 없으니 나는 정말 아무 걱정 없이 편히 쉴 수 있었다.

▷ But these were not woods like the kind they have in Central Park: these were real woods.

Giant trees that almost totally blocked out the sunlight. Tangles of leaves and fallen tree trunks. Howls and chirps and really loud bird calls. There was a slight fog, too, like a pale blue smoke all around us. So cool.

The nature guide pointed everything out to us: the different types of trees we were passing, the insects inside the dead logs on the trail, the signs of deer and bears in the woods, what types of birds were whistling and where to look for them.

I realized that my Lobot hearing aids actually made me hear better than most people, because I was usually the first person to hear a new bird call. It started to rain as we headed back to camp.

I pulled on my rain poncho and pulled the hood up so my hearing aids wouldn’t get wet, but my jeans and shoes got soaked by the time we reached our cabins, Everyone got soaked. It was fun, though.

이곳의 숲은 센트럴 파크에 있는 숲과 같은 숲이 아니었다. 진짜 숲이었다. 햇빛을 거의 완전히 차단한 거대한 나무들. 뒤엉킨 나뭇잎들과 떨어진 나무 줄기들. 윙윙대고 짹짹거리는 커다랗게 울어대는 새소리까지. 옅은 안개도 끼었고, 우리 주위를 에워싼 연한 푸른 연기처럼. 아주 멋지다.

자연 가이드 선생님은 우리에게 모든 걸 가리키며 설명 해주었다. 우리가 지나가고 있는 나무들의 다른 종류들, 오솔길 위에 죽은 통나무안에 있는 곤충들, 숲속의 사슴과 곰의 흔적들, 어떤 종류의 새들이 휘파람을 불었는지 그리고 그 새들을 어디서 찾아야 할지.

나는 내 로봇 보청기가 정말로 대부분의 사람들보다 더 잘 들을 수 있게 해준다는 것을 깨달았다. 왜냐하면 내가 보통 새소리를 처음 듣는 사람이었기 때문이다. 우리가 캠프로 돌아가자 비가 내리기 시작했다.

나는 보청기가 젖지 않도록 비옷을 잡아당겨 모자를 썼지만, 우리가 오두막에 도착했을 때쯤에는 청바지와 신발이 흠뻑 젖었다. 다들 흠뻑 젖었다. 그래도 재미있었다.

▷ I loved hanging out by the campfire after dark. I loved the way bits of fire dust would float up and disappear into the night air. And how the fire lit up people’s faces. I loved the sound the fire made, too. And how the woods were so dark that you couldn’t see anything around you, and you’d look up and see a billion stars in the sky.

The sky doesn’t look like that in North River Heights.

I’ve seen it look like that in Montauk, though: like someone sprinkled salt on a shiny black table. I was so tired when I got back to the cabin that I didn’t need to pull out the book to read.

I fell asleep almost as fast as my head hit the pillow. And maybe I dreamed about the stars, I don’t know.

나는 어두워진 후 모닥불 옆에서 노는 것을 좋아했다. 떠다니는 불 먼지 조각들이 밤공기 속으로 사라지는 모습이 너무 좋았다. 그리고 모닥불이 사람들의 얼굴을 비추는 모습도. 나도 불이 내는 소리가 너무 좋았어. 그리고 숲이 어찌나 어두웠는지 주변엔 아무것도 볼 수 없었지만, 하늘을 올려다보면 십억 개의 별을 볼 수 있었다.

노스 리버 하이츠의 하늘은 그렇게 보이지 않는다.

몬탁에서 본 적이 있는데, 마치 누군가가 빛나는 까만 테이블에 소금을 뿌린 것처럼. 산장에 돌아왔을 때 너무 피곤해서 책을 꺼내 읽을 필요가 없었다.

나는 거의 머리가 베개에 대기 무섭게 빨리 잠이 들었다. 어쩌면 별에 대한 꿈을 꿨는지도 모른다.

▷ By the time the other school buses pulled into the parking lots, we were back in our spots on the sleeping bags, right smack in front of the screen: the best seats in the whole field.

Everyone was passing around snacks and having a great time. Me and Jack and Summer and Reid and Maya played Pictionary. We could hear the sounds of the other schools arriving, the loud laughing and talking of kids coming out on the field on both sides of us, but we couldn’t really see them.

Though the sky was still light, the sun had gone down completely, and everything on the ground had turned deep purple.

The clouds were shadows now.

We had trouble even seeing the Pictionary cards in front of us.

Just then, without any announcement, all the lights at the ends of the field went on at once. They were like big bright stadium lights.

I thought of that scene in Close Encounters when the alien ship lands and they’re playing that music: duh-dah-doo-da-dunnn.

Everyone in the field started applauding and cheering like something great had just happened.

다른 학교 버스들이 주차장에 주차할 때쯤, 우리는 침낭에 있는 우리 자리로 되돌아왔다, 화면 바로앞에 털썩 앉았다. 들판에서 최고의 좌석이었다.

모두가 과자를 돌면서 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있었다. 나와 잭, 썸머, 레이드, 그리고 마야와 함께 카드 놀이를 했다. 우리는 다른 학교들이 도착하는 소리를 들을 수 있었고, 양옆의 들판에 아이들이 나와 웃고 떠드는 소리를 들을 수 있었지만, 실제로 그들을 볼 수는 없었다.

하늘은 아직 밝았지만, 태양은 완전히 진 뒤였고, 땅 위의 모든 것은 짙은 보라색으로 변해 있었다. 구름은 이제 그림자가 되었다. 우리는 앞에 있는 카드를 보는 것조차 힘들었다.

바로 그때 아무런 예고도 없이 들판 끝의 모든 불빛이 한꺼번에 켜졌다. 마치 크고 밝은 경기장 불빛 같았다.

나는 미지와의 조우에서 외계인 비행선이 착륙해서 음악을 연주하던 장면을 떠올렸다. 두-다-다-다-아.

현장에 있던 모든 사람들이 방금 무슨 대단한 일이 일어난 것처럼 박수를 치고 환호하기 시작했다.

Even if you don’t feel like watching the movie, your fellow students may feel otherwise, so please be courteous.

비록 영화를 보고 싶지 않더라도, 다른 친구들은 그렇지 않다고 느낄 수 있으니, 예의 바르게 행동하십시오.

▷ There were lots of kids from the other schools walking around by the foods trucks, playing the carnival games, or just hanging out. Of course, there was a huge line for the toilets.

“Forget this, I’ll just find a tree,” said Jack.

“That’s gross, Jack. Let’s just wait,” I answered.

But he headed off to the row of trees at the edge of the field, which was past the orange cones that we were specifically told not to go past. And of course I followed him. And of course we didn’t have our flashlights because we forgot to bring them. It was so dark now we literally couldn’t see ten steps ahead of us as we walked toward the woods.

Luckily, the movie gave off some light, so when we saw a flashlight coming toward us out of the woods, we knew immediately that it was Henry, Miles, and Amos.

I guess they hadn’t wanted to wait on line to use the toilets, either.

다른 학교의 많은 아이들이 푸드트럭 옆을 돌아다니거나, 인형타기 게임을 하거나, 그냥 놀고 있었다. 당연히 화장실에는 커다란 줄이 늘어서 있었다.

“됐다, 난 그냥 나무를 찾을 거야,” 잭이 말했다.

“더럽게, 잭. 그냥 기다리자” 고 나는 대답했다.

그러나 잭은 들판 가장자리에 늘어선 나무들로 향했다. 그건 우리가 지나가지 말라고 특별히 지시받은 오렌지색 원뿔을 지나 있었다. 당연히 나는 잭을 따라갔다. 그리고 당연히 우리는 손전등을 가지고 있지 않았다. 가져오는 것을 잊어버렸기 때문이다. 너무 어두워서 숲 쪽으로 걸어가자 말 그대로 열 발자국 앞도 보이지 않았다.

다행히도 그 영화는 약간의 빛을 발해 주었기 때문에 숲에서 우리를 향해 오는 손전등을 보았을 때, 우리는 그것이 헨리, 마일즈, 아모스라는 것을 바로 알았다.

걔네들도 화장실을 사용하기 위해 줄 서서 기다리기 싫었던 것 같다.

▷ Jack and I walked a little farther until we were just inside the woods. Then Jack hunted around for the perfect tree and finally did his business, though it felt like he was taking forever.

The woods were loud with strange sounds and chirps and croaks, like a wall of noise coming out of the trees.

Then we started hearing loud snaps not far from us, almost like cap gun pops, that definitely weren’t insect noises.

잭과 나는 숲속 바로 안까지 조금 더 걸어갔다. 그런 다음 잭은 완벽한 나무를 찾아다녔고, 비록 그게 영원히 걸리는 것처럼 느껴졌지만, 마침내 잭은 볼일을 해냈다.

숲은 마치 나무에서 튀어나오는 소리의 장벽처럼 이상한 소리와 짹짹거리고 개굴거리는 소리들로 시끄러웠다.

그때 우리로부터 멀지 않은 곳에서 커다랗게 딱 소리가 들려왔다. 거의 병뚜껑이 딱하고 열리는 소리인 것 같은게, 분명히 벌레 소리는 아니었다.

이맘때쯤에는 꼬옥~ 여행을 갔었는데... 자연으로 캠핑가고 싶네요~ ㅜㅡㅜ 

미국은 락다운 해제가 되면서, 활발하게 활동하면서 여행도 많이 가나봐요. 가고싶은 곳이 있어서 에어비앤비를 봤는데~ 세상에 다 예약이... 아직도 저희 가족은 불안해서 집콕중인데... 😳🙄😅😔 이전처럼 다닐 수 있을거란 기대는 버렸기에 맘편히 적응중이거든요. 하지만 미국은 폭동과 시위로 코로나는 어느새 사라진듯한 느낌이랄까??? 그래서 더 상황이 악화될까봐 조심스럽고 불안하네요ㅠㅠ 여러분들도 항상 건강조심~ 계속 변화하는 이 사회에 함께 잘 적응해가자구요!!!!💪💪💪💪
