오늘은 원더 27일차 - “어거스트”에겐 잊을 수 없는 사건의 이야기예요!
다른 학교 학생들의 갑작스런 괴롭힘에 어쩔 줄 몰라하는 “어기”를 보면서 “잭”이 나서보지만... 힘으로는 당해낼 수가 없네요...😥😓😓 다행히도 누군가 도와주러 나타났는데~ 순간! 그들을 보고도 믿을 수 없었던 “어기”~ 어떤 상황인지~ 함께 원서로 읽어봐요~ 😭😭💪
『원더(Wonder) 원서 읽기』 - 27일차 p265 ~ p274
▷ We headed back the way we came, in the direction of the giant screen. That’s when we walked straight into a group of kids we didn’t know. They’d just come out of the woods, doing stuff I’m sure they didn’t want their teachers to know about. I could smell the smoke now, the smell of both firecrackers and cigarettes. They pointed a flashlight at us. There were six of them: four boys and two girls. They looked like they were in the seventh grade.
우리는 왔던 길로 되돌아갔고, 거대한 스크린의 방향으로 갔다. 그때 우리는 모르는 한 무리의 애들과 맞닥뜨렸다. 그들은 숲에서 막 나왔는데, 선생님들에게 알리고 싶지 않은 일을 한게 분명했다. 지금 그 연기 냄새, 폭죽 냄새와 담배 냄새까지 맡을 수 있었다. 그들은 우리에게 손전등을 겨누었다. 그들은 여섯이었다. 남자 넷과 여자 둘. 7학년쯤 되어 보였다.
▷ When all of a sudden one of the girls started screaming.
“Oh my God!” she shrieked, holding her hand over her eyes like she was crying.
I figured maybe a huge bug had just flown into her face or something.
“No way!” one of the boys cried out, and he started flicking his hand in the air like he’d just touched something hot.
And then he covered his mouth.
“No freakin’ way, man! No freaken’ way!”
All of them started half laughing and half covering their eyes now, pushing each other and cursing loudly.
“What is that?” said the kid who was pointing the flashlight at us, and it was only then that I realized that the flashlight was pointed right at my face, and what they were talking about - screaming about - was me.
“Let’s get out of here,” Jack said to me quietly, and he pulled me by my sweatshirt sleeve and started walking away from them.
“Wait wait wait!” yelled the guy with the flashlight, cutting us off.
갑자기 한 여자애가 비명을 지르기 시작했다.
“오,세상에!” 그녀가 울먹이는 것처럼 손으로 눈을 감싸며 비명을 질렀다.
아마도 얼굴에 커다란 벌레가 날아든 것 같았다.
“말도 안돼” 라고 한 남자애가 외치며 뭔가 뜨거운 것을 만지 듯 허공에 손을 휙휙 내젓기 시작했다.
그리고는 입을 가렸다.
“빌어먹을, 말도 안돼! 빌어먹을, 말도 안돼!”
다들 서로 밀치고 큰 소리로 욕을 하면서, 반은 웃고 반은 눈을 가리기 시작했다.
“저게 뭐야?” 라고 손전등을 우리에게 비추고 있던 아이가 말했는데, 그제서야 손전등이 내 얼굴을 바로 비추고 있다는 것을 깨달았고, 그들이 말하는 소리지르는 대상이 바로 나라는 것을 깨달았다.
“여기서 나가자” 라고 잭이 조용히 내게 말했고, 내 추리닝 소매를 잡아당겨 그들을 피해 걸어가기 시작했다.
“잠깐 잠깐 기다려!” 손전등을 든 남자애가 우리를 가로막으며 소리쳤다.
▷ He pointed the flashlight right in my face again, and now he was only about five feet away.
“Oh, man! Oh man!!” he said, shaking his head, his mouth wide open.
“What happened to your face?”
“Stop it, Eddie,” said one of the girls.
“I didn’t know we were watching Lord of the Rings tonight!” he said.
“Look, guys, it’s Gollum!”
This made his friends hysterical.
Again we tried to walk away from them, and again the kid named Eddie cut us off.
He was at least a head taller than Jack, who was about a head taller than me, so the guy looked huge to me.
“No man, it’s Alien!” said one of the other kids.
“No, no, no, man. It’s an orc!” laughed Eddie, pointing the flashlight in my face again.
This time he was right in front of us.
“Leave him alone, okay?” said Jack, pushing the hand holding the flashlight away.
“Make me,” answered Eddie, pointing the flashlight in Jack’s face now.
“What’s your problem, dude?” said Jack.
“Your boyfriend’s my problem!”
“Jack, let’s just go,” I said, pulling him by the arm.
“Oh man, it talks!” screamed Eddie, shining the flashlight in my face again.
Then one of the other guys threw a firecracker at our feet.
Jack tried to push past Eddie, but Eddie shoved his hands into Jack’s shoulders and pushed him hard, which made Jack fall backward.
남자애는 다시 내 얼굴을 향해 손전등을 비췄고, 이제 겨우 2미터 정도 떨어져 있었다.
“세상에! 세상에!” 남자애는 입을 크게 벌린 채 고개를 저으며 말했다.
“얼굴에 무슨 짓을 한 거야?”
“그만해, 에디.” 한 여자애가 말했다.
“오늘 밤 반지의 제왕을 보는 줄 몰랐네!” 라고 남자애가 말했다.
“봐, 얘들아 골룸이야!”
이 말은 그 친구들을 뒤집어지게 만들었다.
다시 우리는 그들에게서 도망치려 했고, 또다시 에디라는 남자애가 우리를 가로막았다.
나보다 머리 하나가 큰 잭보다 적어도 머리 하나는 더 컸고, 그래서 내게는 거대해 보였다.
“아니지, 에일리언이야!” 다른 애들 중 한명이 말했다.
“아니, 아니, 아니, 짜샤. 오크 족이야!” 에디가 다시 내 얼굴에 손전등을 비추며 웃었다.
이번에는 바로 우리 앞에 있었다.
“걔 건드리지 마, 알았어?” 잭이 손전등을 쥔 손을 밀어내며 말했다.
“해보시지,” 에디가 이젠 잭의 얼굴에 손전등을 비추며 대답했다.
“뭐가 문제야, 어?” 잭이 말했다.
“네 남자친구가 문제지!”
“잭, 그냥 가자.” 나는 잭의 팔을 잡아당기며 말했다.
“세상에, 말도 하네!” 에디가 다시 내 얼굴에 손전등을 비추며 소리쳤다.
그때 다른 남자애들 중 한명이 우리 발밑에 폭죽을 던졌다.
잭은 에디를 밀치고 지나가려고 했지만, 에디는 잭의 어깨에 두 손을 아무렇게나 놓고 세게 밀어서 잭은 뒤로 나자빠졌다.
▷ “Yo, dude,” said a new voice behind us.
“What’s up, man?”
Eddie spun around and pointed his flashlight toward the voice.
For a second, I couldn’t believe who it was.
“Leave them alone, dude,” said Amos, with Miles and Henry right behind him.
“Says who?” said one of the guys with Eddie.
“Just leave them alone, dude,” Amos repeated calmly.
“Are you a freak, too?” said Eddie.
“They’re all a bunch of freaks!” said one of his friends.
Amos didn’t answer them but looked at us.
“Come on, guys, let’s go. Mr. Tushman’s waiting for us.”
I knew that was a lie, but I helped Jack get up, and we started walking over to Amos.
Then out of the blue, the Eddie guy grabbed my hood as I passed by him, yanking it really hard so I was pulled backward and fell flat on my back.
I couldn’t really see what happened afterward, except that Amos rammed into the Eddie guy like a monster truck and they both fell down to the ground next to me.
“어이, 짜샤.” 뒤에서 새로운 목소리가 들려왔다.
“무슨 일이야?”
에디는 휙 돌려서 손전등을 목소리 쪽으로 비추었다.
잠깐 동안, 나는 그게 누구였는지 믿을 수 없었다.
“걔네들 내버려둬,짜샤” 마일즈와 헨리가 바로 뒤에 두고 아모스가 말했다.
“뭔 소리야?” 에디의 친구 중 한 애가 말했다.
“걔네들 건드리지 말라고, 짜샤.” 아모스는 침착하게 되풀이했다.
“너도 괴물이냐?” 에디가 말했다.
“괴물들이 다 모였네!” 에디의 친구 중 한 명이 말했다.
아모스는 그들에게 대답하지 않고 우리를 바라보았다.
“자, 얘들아, 가자. 투쉬만 교장선생님이 기다리고 있어.”
그게 거짓말인 줄 알았지만, 잭이 일어나는 걸 도와줬고 우린 아모스쪽으로 걸어가기 시작했다.
그런데 느닷없이, 내가 지나갈때 에디라는 남자애가 내 모자를 꽉 움켜쥐고, 너무 세게 잡아당겨서 나는 뒤로 끌려가서 등으로 납작 엎어졌다.
나는 아모스가 괴물 트럭처럼 에디라는 남자애를 들이받고 둘 다 내 옆 땅바닥에 쓰러졌다는 것만 빼고는, 그 후의 일은 정말 알 수가 없었다.
▷ Everything got really crazy after that.
Someone pulled me up by my sleeve and yelled, “Run!” and someone else screamed, “Get’em!” at the same time, and for a few seconds I actually had two people pulling the sleeves of my sweatshirt in opposite directions.
I heard them both cursing, until my sweatshirt ripped and the first guy yanked me by my arm and started pulling me behind him as we ran, which I did as fast as I could.
I could hear footsteps just behind us, chasing us, and voices shouting and girls screaming, but it was so dark I didn’t know whose voices they were, running like crazy, and it was pitch black, and whenever I started to slow down, the guy pulling me by my arm would yell, “Don’t stop!”
그 이후로 모든 게 정말 난장판이었다.
누군가 내 소매를 잡아당겨 “뛰어!” 라고 소리쳤고, 다른 누군가가 동시에 “저놈들 잡아!” 라고 소리를 질렀는데, 몇 초 동안 나는 정말로 두 사람이 내 추리닝 소매를 반대 방향으로 잡아당기는 것을 목격했다.
나는 그들 둘 다 욕하는 소리를 들었는데, 내 추리닝이 찢어질 때까지 첫 번째 남자가 내 팔을 잡아당겼고, 우리가 달릴 때 뒤에서 나를 끌어당기기 시작했는데, 나는 할 수 있는 한 빨리 달렸다.
▷ “Yo, dudes,” said Jack, hand high in the air.
“That was really cool of you guys to come back for us. Really cool. Thanks.”
“No problem,” answered Amos, high-fiving Jack.
And then Miles and Henry high-fived him, too.
“Yeah, dudes, thanks,” I said, holding my palm up like Jack just had, though I wasn’t sure if they’d high-five me, too.
Amos looked at me and nodded. “It was cool how you stood your ground, little dude,” he said, high-fiving me.
“Yeah, Auggie,” said Miles, high-fiving me, too. “You were like, ‘We’re littler than you guys’...”
“Very cool,” said Henry, and he high-fiving me, too. “Sorry I ripped your sweatshirt.”
I looked down, and my sweatshirt was completely torn down the middle.
One sleeve was ripped off, and the other was so stretched out it was hanging down to my knees.
“Hey, your elbow’s bleeding,” said Jack.
“Yeah.” I shrugged. It was starting to hurt a lot.
“You okay?” said Jack, seeing my face.
I nodded. Suddenly I felt like crying, and I was trying really hard not to do that.
“여어, 짜식들,” 잭이 손을 높이 들며 말했다.
“우리를 위해 돌아오다니 너네들 진짜 멋졌어. 진짜 끝내줬어. 고마워.”
“천만에.” 잭과 하이파이브를 하며 아모스가 대답했다.
그런 다음 마일즈와 헨리도 잭과 하이파이브를 했다.
“그래, 짜식들, 고마워.” 나한테도 하이파이브를 할진 확신이 없었지만, 잭이 방금 한것처럼 손바닥을 위로 들어올리며 말했다.
아모스는 나를 바라보며 고개를 끄덕였다. “네가 맞서다니 멋졌어, 꼬마 친구” 라며 아모스가 나와 하이파이브하며 말했다.
“그래, 어기.” 마일즈도 나와 하이파이브를 하며 말했다. “네가 그랬잖아, ‘우리는 너희들보다 더 작아…’”
“아주 멋져.” 라고 헨리가 말했고, 헨리는 나와 하이파이브를 했다. “네 추리닝 찢어서 미안해.”
아래를 내려다보니 추리닝 가운데가 완전히 뜯겨져 있었다.
한쪽 소매는 찢어지고, 다른 한쪽은 너무 뻗어서 무릎까지 늘어져 있었다.
“야, 너 팔꿈치에서 피가 나.” 잭이 말했다.
“응.” 나는 어깨를 으쓱했다. 다친 데가 아프기 시작했다.
“괜찮아?” 잭이 내 얼굴을 보며 말했다.
나는 고개를 끄덕였다. 갑자기 울고 싶어졌지만, 그러지 않으려고 정말 애를 썼다.
▷ “Wait, your hearing aids are gone!” said Jack.
“What!” I yelled, touching my ears.
The hearing aid band was definitely gone.
That’s why I felt like I was underwater!
“Oh no!” I said, and that’s when I couldn’t hold it in anymore.
Everything that had just happened kind of hit me and I couldn’t help it:
I started to cry. Like big crying, what Mom would call “the waterworks.”
I was so embarrassed I hid my face in my arm, but I couldn’t stop the tears from coming.
The guys were really nice to me, though.
They patted me on the back.
“You’re okay, dude. It’s okay,” they said.
“You’re one brave little dude, you know that?” said Amos, putting his arm around my shoulders.
And when I kept on crying, he put both his arms around me like my dad would have done and let me cry.
“잠깐, 보청기가 없어졌어!” 잭이 말했다.
“뭐라구!” 나는 귀를 만지며 소리쳤다.
보청기 밴드는 분명히 없어졌다.
그래서 물속에 있는 것 같았구나!
“어쩌지!” 라고 말했고, 그때 더 이상 참을수가 없었다.
방금 일어난 모든 일들이 떠올랐고 나는 어쩔 수가 없었다.
나는 울기 시작했다. 엄마가 “수도꼭지” 라고 부르는 펑펑 울음소리처럼.
너무 창피해서 팔로 얼굴을 가렸지만, 눈물이 나오는 것을 멈출 수가 없었다.
하지만 그 남자들은 나에게 정말 잘해줬어.
애들은 내 등을 두드렸다.
“괜찮아, 짜식. 괜찮아” 라고 말했다.
“ 넌 정말 용감한 꼬마 녀석이야, 알지?” 아모스가 내 어깨에 팔을 두르며 말했다.
그리고 내가 계속 울었을때, 아빠가 그러듯이 두 팔로 내 몸에 감싸고 나를 울게 내버려뒀다.
▷ It’s so weird how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just an ordinary night. Like, on my calendar at home, I would mark this as being one of the most horrific days of my life. This and the day Daisy died. But for the rest of the world, this was just an ordinary day. Or maybe it was even a good day. Maybe somebody won the lottery today.
Amos, Miles, and Henry brought me and Jack over to where we’d been sitting before, with Summer and Maya and Reid, and then they went and sat where they had been sitting before, with Ximena and Savanna and their group. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it before we went looking for the toilets. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same. But something was different. Something had changed.
어떻게 그럴 수 있는지, 누군가의 인생에서는 최악의 밤을 보내는데, 다른 모든 사람들에게는 그게 그저 평범한 밤일 뿐이라는게 참 희한하다. 집에 있는 내 달력에는 이것을 인생에서 가장 끔찍한 날들 중 하나라고 표시할거다. 데이지가 죽은 날과 오늘. 하지만 나머지 세계에게는 오늘은 그저 평범한 하루였다. 아니, 어쩌면 좋은 날이었을지도 모른다. 오늘 누군가는 복권에 당첨된 날일수도 있으니까.
아모스, 마일스, 그리고 헨리는 나와 잭을 썸머, 마야, 레이드와 함께 전에 앉았던 곳으로 데려다줬고, 애들은 히메나와 사바나와 자기들 무리와 함께 전에 앉았던 자리에 가서 앉았다. 어떻게 보면, 모든게 우리가 화장실을 찾기 전에 남겨둔 그대로였다. 하늘도 마찬가지였다. 영화도 마찬가지였다. 모든 사람의 얼굴도 똑같았다. 나도 마찬가지였다. 그러나 뭔가 달랐다. 뭔가 달라져 있었다.
▷ I could see Amos and Miles and Henry telling their group what had just happened. I knew they were talking about it because they kept looking over at me while they were whispering about it in the dark. News like that spreads fast. It was what everyone was talking about on the bus ride back to the cabins.
All the girls, even girls I didn’t know very well, were asking me if I was okay. The boys were all talking about getting revenge on the group of seventh-grade jerks, trying to figure out what school they were from.
I wasn’t planning on telling the teachers about any of what had happened, but they found out anyway. Maybe it was the torn sweatshirt and the bloody elbow. Or maybe it’s just that teachers hear everything.
아모스와 마일즈와 헨리가 자기들 무리에 방금 일어난 일을 말하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 애들이 어둠 속에서 속삭이는 동안 계속 나를 훔쳐보고 있었기 때문에 나는 애들이 그것에 대해 이야기하고 있다는 것을 알았다. 그런 소식은 순식간에 퍼진다. 산장으로 돌아오는 버스에서도 다들 그 이야기뿐이었다.
여자애들 다, 심지어 내가 잘 알지 못하는 여자애들까지도 나에게 괜찮냐고 묻고 있었다. 남자애들은 다 7학년 불량배 패거리에게 복수를 하는 것에 대해 이야기하면서, 걔들이 어느 학교 출신인지 알아내려고 애쓰고 있었다.
나는 선생님들에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지 말할 계획이 없었지만, 어쨌든 알게 되었다. 찢어진 추리닝과 피 묻은 팔꿈치 때문이었을까. 아니면 선생님들도 모든 걸 들었을 지도 모른다.
▷ When we got back to the camp, Mr. Tushman took me to the first-aid office, and while I was getting my elbow cleaned and bandaged up by the camp nurse, Mr. Tushman and the camp director were in the next room talking with Amos and Jack and Henry and Miles, trying to get a description of the troublemakers.
When he asked me about them a little later, I said I couldn’t remember their faces at all, which wasn’t true.
It’s their faces I kept seeing every time I closed my eyes to sleep.
The look of total horror on the girl’s face when she first saw me.
The way the kid with the flashlight, Eddie, looked at me as he talked to me, like he hated me.
Like a lamb to the slaughter.
I remember Dad saying that ages ago, but tonight I think I finally got what it meant.
우리가 캠프에 돌아왔을 때, 투쉬만 교장선생님은 나를 응급실로 데려갔고, 캠프 보건 선생님이 팔꿈치를 소독하고 붕대를 감는 동안, 투쉬만 교장선생님과 캠프 소장님은 옆방에서 아모스와 잭, 헨리와 마일즈와 이야기를 나누며 문제아들의 인상착의를 알아내려고 애쓰고 있었다.
조금 뒤 교장선생님이 그들에 대해 물었을 때 나는 얼굴이 전혀 기억나지 않는다고 말했는데, 사실이 아니었다.
잠을 자려고 눈을 감을 때마다 그들의 얼굴이 계속 떠올랐다.
나를 처음 봤을 때 그 여자애의 얼굴에는 완전히 공포스러운 표정이 역력했다.
손전등을 든 아이, 에디가 증오하듯 말을 건네면서 나를 쳐다봤다.
도살장에 끌려가는 어린 양처럼.
오래 전에 아빠가 그런 말을 했던 게 기억나는데, 오늘 밤 드디어 무슨 뜻인지 알 것 같다.

다시 태어나지 않고서는 절대 바꿀 수 없는 일로서 매순간 상처를 받게 된다면, 어떻게 행복할 수 있을까요??? 힘든 일이지만, 스스로 노력하면 언젠가는 바꿀 수 있다면야~ 오히려 행복하게 받아드릴 수 있다는 걸!!! 원더를 읽으며 다시금 깨닫게 되었어요~😳🙄😅😊👏👏
